The settlement was established on September 8, 1565 by Pedro Menendez de Aviles, a Spanish admiral, 42 years before the colonization of Jamestown and 55 years before William Bradford and the Mayflower Pilgrims reached Plymouth Rock. The city is the only one in the entire country with an urban nucleus reflecting street patterns and architectural ambiance of Spanish origin.
